Bob Riley: Governor of Alabama

Bio:  Bob Riley (born October 3, 1944) in Ashland, Alabama.  Riley is currently serving his second consecutive term as the governor of Alabama.  He is the 52nd governor of Alabama and was first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.  As a member of the Republican Party, Riley has focused his efforts on making the state government more accountable to Alabama tax payers, economic development and education reform.   Riley also signed the first income tax cut in Alabama in the past 70 years, into law in.

Riley has spurred job development in Alabama although he has some critics.  The unemployment rate has climbed from 5.3% in January, 2003 to 3.3% in March of 2006.  This was the lowest for Alabama since 1976.  Currently the unemployment rate has climbed to record highs.  In April the unemployment rate climbed to 9.0%, the state’s highest unemployment rate in 25 years.

Before serving as Alabama’s state governor, Riley served in the states third congressional district as a representative in congress.  He served in this position from 1997 to 2003.  Riley is a strong believer in term limits and kept his promise to only serve three terms.  He was then elected as the next governor of Alabama.  The Washington Times is speculating that Riley will enter the 2012 Presidential election.
