Ted Stevens (R-AK) Former Senator: Dies in Plane Crash

Theodore Fulton Stevens (born November 18, 1923) was the senior United States Senator from Alaska. The longest serving Republican in the Senate, Stevens served as President pro tempore from January 3, 2003, to January 3, 2007.

Stevens has had a six-decade career in government, beginning with his service in World War II. In the 1950s, he held senior positions in the Eisenhower Interior Department. He has served continuously in the Senate since December 1968. One of his most notable accomplishments was the sponsorship of the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, which resulted in the establishment of the United States Olympic Committee. Daschle Withdraws from HHS Secretary

WASHINGTON (AP) – Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination on Tuesday to be President Barack Obama‘s Health and Human Services secretary, dealing potential blows to both speedy health care reform and Obama’s hopes for a smoother start as president.”Now we must move forward,” Obama said in a written statement accepting “with sadness and regret” Daschle’s surprise request to be removed from consideration. A day earlier, Obama had said he “absolutely” stood by Daschle in the face of problems over back taxes and potential conflicts of interest.

Daschle, the former Senate Democratic leader and a strong backer of Obama’s presidential bid, said he would have been unable to operate “with the full faith of Congress and the American people.”  read more
