Ted Stevens (R-AK) Former Senator: Dies in Plane Crash

Theodore Fulton Stevens (born November 18, 1923) was the senior United States Senator from Alaska. The longest serving Republican in the Senate, Stevens served as President pro tempore from January 3, 2003, to January 3, 2007.

Stevens has had a six-decade career in government, beginning with his service in World War II. In the 1950s, he held senior positions in the Eisenhower Interior Department. He has served continuously in the Senate since December 1968. One of his most notable accomplishments was the sponsorship of the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, which resulted in the establishment of the United States Olympic Committee. Charles Kong Djou (born August 9, 1970) took the oath of office on May 25, 2010 for Hawaii’s 1st congressional district, which was vacated by the resignation of Neil Abercrombie. (1/24/09) ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Joseph Bruno, the former majority leader of the New York Senate and for a time the most powerful Republican in state politics, was indicted Friday on federal corruption charges.

Bruno, who retired from the Legislature in July after more than a dozen years leading the Senate, is accused of using his position to steer contracts and grants to businesses that paid him a total of $3.2 million in consulting fees or other compensation from 1993 through 2006, and then covering his tracks.

Prosecutors said in one instance, Bruno solicited officials from several labor unions with interests before state government to hire an investment firm that paid him $1.3 million over a 12-year period. Read more…

George S. LeMieux (born May 21, 1969) is currently the junior United States Senator from Florida. He was Chairman of the Florida-based law firm of Gunster Yoakley & Stewart, P.A. and served as Chief of Staff to Governor Charlie Crist, was former Deputy Florida Attorney General, and is credited with spearheading Crist’s successful campaign for Governor.[1] On August 28,2009, Governor Crist announced that he would appoint LeMieux as senator, to replace Senator Mel Martinez,[2] who weeks earlier announced he would resign as soon as Crist announced his successor.[3]
